Introduction

Every day, we dedicate a significant portion of our time to activities whose added value we don't really see. These activities have a name: MUDAS (a Japanese word meaning waste).

Nobody likes MUDAS

Waste (Mudas) is a problem. It erodes customer satisfaction, undermines employee motivation, and reduces business performance.

Nobody likes Mudas because nobody has time to waste.

The MUDA SAFARI program consists of 8 stages:

  1. The first step is to define the hunting ground and the rules of the game.
  2. The second step involves selecting, informing, and training hunters.
  3. The hunters participate in a workshop to identify and describe the MUDAS
  4. The MUDAS are then analyzed to sort those to be eliminated as a priority.
  5. Workshops are organized to target the MUDAS to be eliminated as a priority.
  6. Each manager gathers their team to define objectives and action plans
  7. Shares are tracked weekly and profits monthly.

Every victory is shared and celebrated by all the hunters.

If you are here, it means you have been selected to hunt down MUDAS and this questionnaire is the first step which should not take you more than 15 minutes:

(Note: The best hunters complete this stage in less than 10 minutes...)

How much time do you estimate you spend on activities for which you don't really see the added value?

Where do you encounter the most voracious MUDAS?

This question scans the processes of the Finance function to identify those for which the density of MUDAS is the highest.

The traditional approach is to use the company's process repository. It is also possible to use other repositories (e.g., geographical areas, functions and professions, market segments, tools and software, etc.) and combine them.

Experience shows that Mudas love to live in dark and inaccessible places. They use complexity and shadows to hide and thrive.

This is why MUDAS are often found at the interfaces of processes, tools, functions, companies, etc.

Here is a list of some processes.

Choose the 3 processes that seem to harbor particularly voracious MUDAS (in other words, the processes on which the potential productivity gains are the highest)

What would you like to do with your time if you had more of it?

Eliminating waste (Muda) allows you to quickly reduce the time spent on activities that add no value. The time freed up can then be reinvested in higher value-added activities such as (for example):

  • Cost optimization and risk management
  • Improving the quality of products and services
  • Optimizing tools and methods
  • Innovation and development of offerings
  • Listening to and satisfying customers and prospects
  • Penetration and development of new markets
  • ...

The freed-up time can also be used to reduce pressure and improve working conditions for employees (and partners). The measurable benefits are then:

  • Better team engagement
  • A reduction in absenteeism
  • A decrease in the number of resignations
  • Improved company attractiveness
  • Greater involvement of suppliers
  • ...

The answer to this question helps to understand the aspirations of employees.

Thank you for the time and seriousness you devoted to this exercise. The analyzes are accessible to all participants and I invite you to go see the MUDAS posted by your colleagues to comment on them and LIKE them.

You will soon be invited to a presentation of the analysis of the results and we will take the opportunity to sort the opportunities and define priorities together. This challenge is only the first step: the best is yet to come ;-)

If you have any questions or comments, don't hesitate!
